Ground up restoration - in progress

This bike was purchased new by the current owner in 1975 from the Portland Motorcycle Co. and has been owned by him ever since. He rode it out to California early on in their relationship, where it, and he, were involved in an accident. He managed to get the bike repaired with spares parts on hand at a nearby Ducati dealer, not always the correct ones for the model, but enough to be able to ride it home. Another accident several years later put the bike in a barn where it sat for the best part of 20 years. Deciding to get the bike running again the owner had the slight bend in the frame expertly straightened, and set about dismantling the engine. Which is where the project stalled for another 10 years. That's when he called and asked if I could put his motor back together for him. I said "sure bring it down." When he arrived it was with the whole bike...

So far we have done a complete motor re-build with fresh bored cylinders and new pistons, and every bearing has been replaced. The motor sat open without oil for 10 years and all the bearings acquired rust. We inspected and re-shimmed the crank and transmission, and resealed the cases. We also installed a Dyna ignition upgrade, and converted the shim adjustment valve/rocker assembly to screw and nut type to facilitate simple valve adjustment. Otherwise I have tried to keep as much of the character of the bike intact, as the odd matched parts and fixes all tell the story of his life with it... As I understand the situation the owner and his wife intend to "ride the snot out it..." once they get it back. Now that's what I like to hear!

The day it arrived...
